Overview

This document should be used in conjunction with M1/M2 Printer. Please use Cassette Care as your main resource for cassette maintenance and only use this document for C5 specific information.

C5 Cassette and C5 Cable

The C5 Cassette is a heated device specifically designed for use with RPU 130 on an M2 printer.

The C5 cassette resembles the standard C2 cassette, with the inclusion of thermal control and a cable connection point to draw power directly from the printer.

Use Cases

RPU 130 is a high viscosity resin that requires heating while printing to obtain proper resin flow. The C5 Cassette provides a heating element to facilitate the necessary temperature regulation.

  • The C5 Cassette is compatible with all M2 printers and is required to print RPU 130.
    • A C5 cable is required to enable thermal control and must be connected for use during printing.
    • You can print any resin with the C5 cassette.
      • The C5 cable must be plugged in for the cassette to be recognized properly by the printer.
    • An M1 printer cannot print RPU 130 as no C5 Cassette is available.
    • M3, M3 Max and L1 printers can print RPU 130 with a standard cassette because these printers have a built-in heating component.

Features

The C5 cassette is similar to the standard C2 cassette with a few key differences:

  • C5 label
  • Heat caution label
  • C5 cable connection point

Underside of the cassette

The underside of the cassette contains kinematic pin mounts, which allows for accurate installation of the cassette in the printer.

Care must be taken not to damage or contaminate any of these features during handling or storage.

Safety

Heat Warning

When handling the C5 cassette, be careful to avoid touching the vacuum fittings on the underside of the cassette, as they can become very hot.

Installation

1

Open M2 Door Partway

  1. Use footswitch twice in quick succession
  2. Align door edge with right side of platform.

Door is properly positioned partway

2

Remove Port Cover

  1. Locate the connector port to the right of the elevator, at the back of the deck.
  2. Use a flat head screwdriver to remove the flexible cover.

Plug is ready for C5 Cable

3

Thread Cable Behind Elevator

  1. Run the cassette connector end of the C5 cable behind the elevator pillar.
  2. Leave the silver printer connector end by the port on the right side.

4

Plug C5 Cable into M2 Printer

  1. Locate the notch on the silver connector.
  2. Locate the matching notch on the printer port.
  3. Plug the cable into the printer port.
  4. Rotate the locking ring on the cable connector to secure.

Connecting C5 Cable to Cassette

The C5 cable must be properly connected to the C5 cassette in order to print.

1

Install C5 Cassette

  1. Place C5 cassette in M2 printer.
  2. Gently adjust cassette to make sure it is sitting level.
  3. Lock cassette.

2

Prep Connector Interface

Ensure that both the connector pins on the C5 cable and on the C5 cassette are free from resin contamination:

  1. C5 cable connector: Wipe with an acetone moistened towel to clean.
  2. C5 cassette interface: Use an acetone moistened towel to clean.

Do not spray solvent directly on the connector pins as this will damage the connector.

3

Connect C5 Cable

Move the connector close to the interface. Magnets will snap the connector into place when the connector is close enough.

4

Verify Proper Connection

  • To ensure that the connector is correctly attached, the printer screen should no longer be showing the Plug in cassette screen.
  • With a properly attached cable, the screen will now prompt you to Close door.

If the C5 cable becomes disconnected during a print, the printer will continue to print, but an error will be present on the printer display.

C5 Cable Hook Installation

Installing C5 cable hook

The C5 cable comes with a hook to keep the cable safely out of the way when printing with the standard C2 cassette instead of the C5 cassette.

Process Summary

  1. Clean the left side of printer elevator
  2. Disconnect C5 cable from cassette
  3. Connect C5 cable to hook interface
  4. Locate the hook position
  5. Peel and stick the hook

Detailed Steps

1

Clean the left side of printer elevator

Use an IPA dampened blue towel to clean the left side of the elevator.

Discarding Unused Resin from a C5 Cassette

When using an M Series Pour Stand to discard used resin from the C5 cassette, position the cassette to drain from the corner without the cable connection point to avoid getting resin on the port.

Otherwise, resin could run onto the cable connection point and damage the interface.

C5 Cassette Cleaning

Refer to Cassette Care for complete cassette cleaning instructions.

All standard instructions for M Series Cassette Cleaning apply to the C5 cassette as well.

Cleaning after using RPU 130

Due to the high viscosity of RPU 130, additional attention is required when cleaning the C5 cassette. Follow the tip below to ensure your cassette stays clean and working well.

Document image

Clean Soon After Printing

Cleaning the cassette as soon as possible after printing is recommended.

The closer RPU 130 is to the end of its pot life, the thicker and more difficult to clean it becomes.

Clean with IPA Wipes

The IPA wipes recommended in Accessories & Supplies are made from a polyester knit rather than paper, making them especially durable for the high viscosity of RPU 130.

Longer Prints

After longer prints, resin may be so thick that skipping the IPA step and proceeding with acetone may help.

  • Fill the cassette with enough acetone to cover the window.
  • Let soak for 60 seconds to loosen the resin.
  • Wipe clean with acetone wipes per standard protocol.

Seam Requires Extra Cleaning

  • Wipe the seam with the corner of an acetone wipe.
  • Repeat with a clean corner of the wipe until the wipe comes out clean.
