Preparation Options

There are two options to properly prepare your denture bases for printing:

This guide provides instruction for manual preparation first so that the technician understands what a properly oriented and supported base looks like.

Denture bases can be oriented two different ways:

  • Anterior facing the platform
  • Posterior facing the platform

Both orientations result in good part quality. So technicians can choose which option they prefer.

After describing manual preparation, this course will cover automatic preparation using the Auto Nest Dentures tool.

Please note that it is crucial that you read and understand the manual preparation method so that you evaluate the output of the Auto-Nest tool to ensure proper orientation and supports before starting a build.

General Orientation & Support Information

Overhang Detection

Click Overhang Detection button (V key) to find areas that need support.

  • Set the angle to 30 degrees.

Use Patch and Fence tools to create supports

Patch tool

  • The Patch tool speeds up support creation by automatically supporting an area with just a few clicks. It is useful for supporting larger areas of overhang that would take longer to support manually.
  • It is often useful to support your parts with this tool before manually adding supports.
  • Use patches to create supports for the anterior facial region.
Document image

Fence tool

  • Fence supports are manually placed by the user and are best suited where precision is required. They are best used on linear overhangs or smaller areas.
    • Fences provide stability while leaving smaller nubs than the default Bars option.
  • Fences are used along the lingual and buccal edges for lower dentures and along lingual edges on upper dentures. In some cases, fences are needed on bars or the posterior edges of upper dentures.

Error: Support Couldn't Be Added

Sometimes an error will occur when you try to generate a new fence.

If this happens, the points will turn pink and an error message will appear.

Try making multiple shorter fences or try adding the fence in a slightly different place.

Anterior at Platform

Orientation

Proper orientation of bases is critical to achieve the required accuracy. Failure to orient denture bases according to these instructions may impact accuracy and part quality.

Anterior at platform orientation is not valid for printing with the AO Polishing Cassette.

LOWER DENTURE BASE

  • 65-degree tilt with posterior rotated away from platform.
  • Tissue side faces platform.
  • Anterior touches the platform.

UPPER DENTURE BASE

  • 70-degree tilt with posterior rotated away from platform.
  • Tissue side faces platform.
  • Anterior touches the platform.

Tooth Pockets

The areas below tooth pockets must be supported using the Fence tool.

  • Support both upper and lower dentures.
  • Be sure to support the papillae (triangular area between teeth).
  • Support under all pockets that have overhangs indicated in red.
  • Adding supports in tooth pockets is discouraged as it may require additional finishing and may affect tooth fit.
