Parts are printed in the build area. Operators will primarily interact with components in this part of the printer during daily operation. The major components of the build area are:

  • Platform
  • Cassette

More information on the Build Area are provided in a detailed diagram below.

2

The body is the portion of the printer below the build area. It is clad with white sheet metal.

3

The foot is the base of the printer.

  • There are four leveling feet used to stabilize the printer.
4

The door is the curved, transparent yellow barrier that encloses and protects the build area.

  • The door rotates behind the build area and is activated using the door switch located at the foot of the machine.
  • The door protects your part from ambient UV light as well as protecting against dust or objects interfering with the printing process.
  • The door sensors are disabled during printing and forcing open the door will automatically abort your print.

In case of emergency, press the Emergency Stop button. When pressed, power will be cut to most printer systems and all printer motion will cease.

  • Your in-progress print will be lost if the Emergency Stop button is pushed. Any partially printed parts will need to be discarded and reprinted.
6

The display shows the printer’s status and has buttons for performing basic functions.

7

The foot switch, located underneath the front edge of the printer, allows the user to open and close the door by placing their foot under the printer and lifting up.

  • Note: This is a non-contact switch for hands-free door operation.

The cassette is a highly engineered optical device that is a critical component of the  Digital Light Synthesis™ platform.  It is a removable appliance that holds the liquid resin used to make parts.

  • The window must be properly maintained to ensure print quality. Improper maintenance or damage to the window will reduce print quality and may result in failed prints and production delays.

Cassette

M1

  • Weight: ~2 kg (4.4 lbs)
  • Dimensions: ~254 mm x 191 mm x 76 mm (10” x 7.5” x 3”)
  • Resin Capacity: 800 mL

M2

  • Weight: ~2.8 kg (6.2 lbs)
  • Dimensions: ~298 mm x 254 mm x 83 mm (11.75” x 10” x 3.25”)
  • Resin Capacity: 1600 mL

The feature diagrams below are showing a standard M2 C2 cassette. All features apply, in similar fashion, to the M1 cassette.

Graduation lines indicate volume in milliliters.

The lines may be used as an approximation of resin amount when dispensing.  (Other options also available.)

The window in the bottom of the cassette allows light and air to pass through into the resin during printing.

The transparent window is not a simple piece of glass. It is a complex light- and oxygen-permeable membrane that is precious and delicate, like the surface of your eye.

4
Document image

The seam is where the window meets the frame. Do not use sharp tools to clean residual resin from the seam as this will damage the window.

5

There are handles on both sides of the cassette frame. The cassette can be gripped using these features.

Cassette Volume

  • The M1 cassette holds a maximum of 800 mL of resin, due to the smaller build platform.
  • The larger M2 cassette holds 1600 mL of resin.

Underside of the Cassette

The underside of the M1 and M2 cassettes contains kinematic pin mounts, which allow for accurate installation of the cassette in the printer.

Care must be taken not to damage or contaminate any of these features during handling or storage.

M1 Cassette Gasket

The underside of the M1 cassette contains a gasket around the perimeter on the underside. This is a legacy feature and is no longer required.

If the gasket comes loose, simply pull it off completely to ensure the cassette remains level. A replacement gasket will not be required.

Additional Cassette Types

  • AO Polishing Cassette: Developed specifically for oral health applications, this cassette features light scattering technology to improve surface quality and reduce the need for manually finishing splints.
    • This cassette is labelled C4.
  • C5 Cassette: This heated cassette enables RPU 130 on M2 printers.

Cassette Lid

The cassette lid is a UV-resistant cover that enables resin to be stored in a cassette outside of a printer. The lid keeps light, dust and debris from getting to the resin stored in the cassette, keeping the resin safe for reuse. The lid is especially helpful for oral health customers that use one-part resins.

Only one-part resins can be stored in the cassette. Two-part resins cannot be stored due to their limited pot life. Two-part resins that are past their pot life may damage the cassette.

Easy labeling

The cassette lid features a shiny surface that is designed to be used with a chalk marker.

Be sure to write the name of the stored resin on the shiny surface. The writing can easily be erased with a towel moistened with IPA or water.

The lid must be removed from the cassette before printing. As such, the cassette lid is designed to dislodge from the cassette if the two are placed in an M2 printer.

Additional lids can be ordered from the Carbon Shop in quantities of two. Login is required.

Platform

The platform is a flat surface upon which parts are printed. It is held in place by the build arm which moves vertically to build parts. When printing is completed, the platform is removed from printer so that parts can be detached from the platform then washed and cured.

  • The platform has a front handle for ease of insertion and removal.
    • The handle may be removed from the platform by loosening the button head screw on the neck of the platform (M1 only).
  • The kinematic balls engage with the printer in the platform latch. (See Maintenance section for care.)
  • The platform can be scratched by steel tools such as the yellow scraper when removing parts.
    • Keep all bladed tools parallel with the platform during part removal to minimize chances of damaging the platform.
    • Scratches and dings on the platform’s printing surface will show on parts where they contact the platform.
  • Dents, bumps, and scratches on the platform can damage the window of the cassette. It is critical to clean it carefully and always treat the platform gently. Inspect the platform for damage before loading into the printer.
  • Platform Build Area Dimensions
    • M1: 141 mm x 79 mm (5.6” x 3.1”)
    • M2: 189 mm x 118 mm (7.4” x 4.6”)

Elevator

Elevator
Elevator

  • The elevator is a vertical rail in the back of the build area.
  • The platform moves up and down along the elevator during printing.
  • The home position of the platform is at the top of the elevator.
    • Every print starts with the platform at the home position.
    • The platform may only be removed at the home position.

Deck

  • The deck is the floor of the build area.
  • It supports the elevator and includes the deck glass and cassette latch.
  • The deck glass is a transparent window through which digitally projected light shines to cure the liquid resin.
  • The deck also includes two circular connectors, one on each side of the elevator in the back.
    • Right side: available for use with the C5 cassette and cable (required for RPU 130).
    • Left side: reserved for future Carbon Service upgrades.
  • The cassette latch is a handle that locks the cassette in place during printing.

Power Supply Cable

  • The regionally specific power supply cable (and any applicable adapters) can be obtained separately from Carbon by contacting your Account Manager or Sales Operations via email at [email protected].
  • ⚠️ The printer must be grounded. In the event of a malfunction or breakdown, grounding will reduce the risk of electric shock by providing a path of least resistance for electric current.
  • The power supply cable is equipped with a cord having an equipment-grounding conductor and a grounding plug. The plug must be plugged into an appropriate outlet that is installed and grounded in accordance with all local codes and ordinances.
Document image

  • To connect the printer to the main supply, plug the power cable into the appropriately installed and grounded outlet in your facility. No additional protective earthing methods are necessary.
  • Check with a qualified electrician if you are in doubt whether the printer is properly grounded. Do not modify the plug provided with the power supply cable; if it will not fit the outlet, have a proper outlet installed by a qualified electrician.

Foot

  • The foot of the printer includes the door switch and the leveling feet.
  • The door switch is a hands-free method for opening or closing the door.
  • To activate the door switch:
    • Place your foot under the printer for a second or two.
    • The door will open.
  • The 5 leveling feet are used to stabilize and level the printer.
  • Door operation may be affected by an optional safety interlock. If the door opens while printing, power to the platform motor stops immediately, likely resulting in a failed print.
