# How to Identify

Over-adhesion is really an experience while removing the part from the platform, rather than a defect itself. Other defects may arise as a result of the difficulty in platform removal, as shown in the examples below, or you may simply be adding time to production as the labor to remove these parts becomes a burden.

Over-adhesion can be experienced as follows:&#x20;

- Parts are very difficult to remove from the platform.&#x20;
- Parts exhibit [Flashing](docId:24ACfQ6OLEy813QgV8Hfw) where they attach to the platform.
- Parts exhibit [Chipping](docId:03vZH0j7nC3Bi1Cbps8mm) or [Gouging](docId\:LwfeMtuBtirwS-IJ-caio) where they meet the platform when attempting to remove.

# Troubleshooting

## Do you see a defect?

If you see [Flashing](docId:24ACfQ6OLEy813QgV8Hfw), [Chipping](docId:03vZH0j7nC3Bi1Cbps8mm)**&#x20;,&#x20;**&#x6F;r [Gouging](docId\:LwfeMtuBtirwS-IJ-caio), refer to that defect's troubleshooting for specific guidelines.

### Is the part difficult to remove without a defect?

:::hint{type="info"}
It is recommended that you review all the possible solutions before taking action to ensure you are pursuing the best course of action.
:::

If the best course of action is not apparent, try the troubleshooting options in the order listed. Refer [here](docId\:pPm8gmeGCY_0fkFwgTCyj) for more tips.

## Process and Hardware Checks

If any of these conditions apply to your print, take the corrective action and reprint to see if the problem is resolved.

### Platform

- For new platforms
  - The factory coating may make parts difficult to remove. Use acetone wipes or an acetone soaked blue towel to scrub off the coating.
- For platforms that have been in production, refer to the Diagnostics section.

### Release Film

Release film reduces adhesion.
If you experience over-adhesion, try printing the build using release film.

:::

### Process Technique

- Try removing parts from the platform with a dead blow hammer and scraper, when too much force is needed with the scraper tool alone:
  - Align the scraper blade with the part.
  - Tap back of the scraper tool **LIGHTLY** with the hammer.
  - Make sure to keep blade against platform at all times.

## Diagnostics

If the above checks & actions did not resolve the issue or do not apply to your print, the following diagnostics may further inform what is causing the issue.

:::ExpandableHeading
### Hardware

- Print with a different platform
  - If the issue is resolved with another platform, reach out to [Carbon Support](mailto\:support@carbon3d.com) for assistance with the problematic hardware.
- If the issue persists with the same platform, run an [Alignment Squares Test](docId\:eneYDJvgK9I1zhog5jjJE).

## Print Preparation or Part Design Adjustments

The following solutions will address print or part-related causes of the defects. Choose among the suggested actions below and select the best approach for your application. Usually only one type of adjustment is needed.

:::::ExpandableHeading{isOpen="true"}
### Orientation

::::VerticalSplit{layout="middle"}
:::VerticalSplitItem
Change the orientation to place a smaller cross section on the platform.

:::::ExpandableHeading{isOpen="true"}
### Supports

::::VerticalSplit{layout="middle"}
:::VerticalSplitItem
Support the part off the platform.&#x20;

- Supports will provide a smaller cross section on the platform
- The scraper tool used to remove the part from the platform will not touch the part, protecting it from damage.

### Design

::::VerticalSplit{layout="middle"}
:::VerticalSplitItem
Redesign the part with fillets or bevels at the platform edges.

<font color="#d32f4a">**Use extreme caution with this troubleshooting option.**</font>
A common cause for the inverse defect, [Under-Adhesion](docId\:DAbqNXb4KnG1eeiClRzqF), can be from this type of design. This is best utilized for rigid resins when the cross section on the platform is large and other solutions are not viable.

[5 Exposure Parameters](docId\:nunXRrM4bWbawUQk0FrDt)&#x20;
*To reduce adhesion*

- <u>Exposure Timing Parameters</u>
  - Base Exposure Multiplier
- <u>Brightlining Parameters</u>
  *All four parameters must be specified*

# Explanation & Causes

## Explanation

::::VerticalSplit{layout="middle"}
:::VerticalSplitItem
The first slices of the build are exposed to a higher level of UV light to promote adhesion. This can result in parts that are very strongly adhered to the platform.

- Geometries with larger cross-sections at the platform are the most susceptible to over-adhesion.
- EPX may be more prone to over-adhesion due to its rigidity.

## Causes

### Print Preparation or Part Design

::::VerticalSplit{layout="middle"}
:::VerticalSplitItem
How the part is **oriented**, **supported**, or **designed&#x20;**&#x69;s causing the defect.

The printer, cassette, or platform is **dirty** or requires **maintenance&#x20;**&#x74;o resolve the defect.

Occasionally, a defect may indicate the printer requires servicing by a Carbon engineer.

[Print Plan Adjustments](docId\:NxUK0dltz_vemEAU0DIpN) adjust the print plan to optimize mid to high volume production and/or address part defects.&#x20;

In doing so, adjustment may both **prevent or cause defects**. Below are adjustments that can cause this defect.
