# Overview

Industrial honey spinners are a good option for using centrifugal force to remove liquid resin from parts.

Honey spinners deliver much faster spinning (rpm or rotations per minute) than a manual spinner, which creates more force for removing liquid resin from part surfaces.

In some cases, this faster spinning can provide solvent-free cleaning of parts, particularly latticed parts like protective pads.

The [Lyson Premium 20 Frame Extractor 600mm](https://www.betterbee.com/extracting/lyson-w230p.asp) (pictured above) is a model that meets or exceeds the recommendations below.

# Recommendations

## Horsepower

Carbon recommends a spinner with **0.5 - 1.0 horsepower (350-750 watts).**

Using a lower power unit is possible. But it will take more time for the spinner to achieve an effective speed. In extreme cases (very heavy, large parts) the spinner may never achieve the target speed.

## Speed

Spinning speed of **600 - 1000 rpm** (rotations per minute) is a good range that should provide sufficient force to remove liquid resin from parts.

- The best speed is highly variable based on part geometry, material and orientation in the spinner.
- Delicate parts should be spun at lower speeds. Generally, it is a good rule of thumb to spin at lower speeds, check the parts and then increase the speed to determine the optimal speed for a particular part.

## Mounting Features

Honey spinners are designed to hold industry-standard bee keeping frames. So the spinner interior must be modified to securely hold parts during spinning.

- Vertical surfaces or brackets can be affixed to the existing spinning frame.
- Modifications should be light weight and reasonably durable. Aluminum sheet metal is a good option.

# Operation

These are generic instructions. Consult the product manual for your specific honey spinner for precise information.

:::hint{type="info"}
These instructions assume that you have already retrofitted your honey spinner with features to hold the wrapped parts during spinning.
:::

:::::WorkflowBlock
:::WorkflowBlockItem
Remove part(s) from platform.
:::

:::WorkflowBlockItem
Place a piece of aluminum foil on a working surface.

- The foil should be large enough to completely cover the part(s) you intend to spin clean.
:::

:::WorkflowBlockItem
Place a shop towel on the foil.

- Make sure the towel(s) are large enough to completely cover the part(s) you intend to spin clean.
:::

:::WorkflowBlockItem
Carefully wrap the part(s) in the shop towel.
:::

::::WorkflowBlockItem
Carefully fold the foil around the shop towel bundle.

- Do not compress or otherwise put pressure on the foil while wrapping.
- Fold edges together to provide a tight seal against leaks.

:::hint{type="warning"}
Containing liquid resin within the shop towel/foil package is extremely important. Liquid resin that escapes will coat the inside of the honey spinner and is challenging to remove.

::::

:::WorkflowBlockItem
Repeat wrapping process as needed until all parts are wrapped.
:::

:::WorkflowBlockItem
Place foil packages in honey spinner.

- For heavier parts, consider placing packages opposite one another to maintain balance.
- Consider orienting package seams towards the interior of the spinner. This will help reduce the chances of leaks.
:::

:::WorkflowBlockItem
Close the honey spinner lid.
:::

:::WorkflowBlockItem
Select the speed and start the spinner.
:::

:::WorkflowBlockItem
When the spin cycle is complete, remove the parts and inspect them.

- If parts are not sufficiently clean, consider a longer spin cycle or increasing the spin speed.
- Additionally, parts may be washed according to the standard protocol.

# Maintenance

Clean resin residue with blue shop towels and IPA as it occurs.

- If resin is allowed to build up it may affect the functioning of the honey spinner.
- Uncured resin may also contaminate parts that are placed in the spinner.
