# General Orientation & Support Information

## Hide the Platform

Use **Toggle platform** (or press **B**) to hide the platform before orienting parts. This will make it easier to see overhangs and place supports.

## Use Patch and Fence tools to create supports

::::VerticalSplit{layout="middle"}
:::VerticalSplitItem
### Patch tool

- The [Patch tool](docId\:VUbpoAitbLM11aM9-qJ1p) speeds up support creation by automatically supporting an area with just a few clicks. It is useful for supporting **larger areas** of overhang that would take longer to support manually.
- It is often useful to support your parts with this tool **before&#x20;**&#x6D;anually adding supports.

::Image[]{src="https://res.cloudinary.com/carbon3d/image/upload/v1741914725/Education/Materials/dental/__General_Use/standard-support-menu-patch.png" size="50" width="208" height="73" position="flex-start" showCaption="false"}

::::VerticalSplit{layout="middle"}
:::VerticalSplitItem
### Fence tool

- [Fence supports](docId\:VUbpoAitbLM11aM9-qJ1p) are manually placed by the user and are best suited on **linear overhangs&#x20;**&#x6F;r smaller areas.&#x20;
  - Fences provide stability while leaving smaller nubs than the default Bars option.

### Add Supports To Overhangs

Add supports to large overhangs (red areas) to maintain part quality.

::::VerticalSplit{layout="middle"}
:::VerticalSplitItem

1. Click the <font color="#05a9f4">**Multiple supports**</font> icon in the top menu bar.
2. <font color="#ff9900">**Add support(s) to overhangs** </font>as needed.
3. Click <font color="#6752ff">**Generate** </font>in the top right corner to create support structures.
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 as necessary until all large overhangs are properly supported.

**Notes**

- Do not over-support the model. Too many supports will make post-processing challenging.
- Typically, supports should be no less than **2-3 mm&#x20;**&#x61;part. Use the <font color="#30c49a">**Measure tool**</font> in the lower tool bar as needed.
:::

:::VerticalSplitItem

:::
::::

### Add Supports To Islands

**Islands** are parts of the RPD that will float away if they are not connected to the platform with supports. Unsupported islands will create problems further along in the print.

::::VerticalSplit{layout="middle"}
:::VerticalSplitItem
1\. Position the camera so you are looking straight down on the platform:

- <font color="#6752ff">**Push the Reset camera icon**</font> in the lower left corner of the screen to return to the default view.

::::VerticalSplit{layout="middle"}
:::VerticalSplitItem
2\. Click <font color="#30c49a">**Toggle clip plane**</font> in the lower menu bar or press the <font color="#30c49a">**C key**</font>. This provides a cutaway view of the model.

3\. <font color="#ff3399">**Move the clip plane handle all the way to the left**</font> so the clip plane is at the level of the platform.

- Moving the handle slowly to the right will move the clip plane away from the platform, revealing more of the RPD. This simulates the printing process of gradually building the part.
- As you move the handle, different areas of the part will be revealed. <font color="#ff9900">**Each new area is potentially an island**</font>. These areas must be supported to ensure an accurate and complete build.

Under **Print Profile** select either **Default or Dynamic**.

- Dynamic mode will print in approximately half the time. Due to this, print forces are elevated, requiring greater vigilance in supporting of the parts.
- Unsupported regions with larger cross-sections such as horizontal sprues and crossbars should be supported across their length to increase print success.
