# General Orientation & Support Information

## Hide the Platform

Use **Toggle platform** (or press **B**) to hide the platform before orienting parts. This will make it easier to see overhangs and place supports.

## Use Fence tool to create supports

::::VerticalSplit{layout="middle"}
:::VerticalSplitItem
### Fence tool

- [Fence supports](docId\:VUbpoAitbLM11aM9-qJ1p) are manually placed by the user and are best suited on **linear overhangs&#x20;**&#x6F;r smaller areas.&#x20;
  - Fences provide stability while leaving smaller nubs than the default Bars option.

# Crowns

## Proper Orientation of Crowns

Carbon recommends:

- No overhangs on crown margins.
- No overhangs on interface surfaces.
- Minimum overhangs on buccal/lingual crown surfaces.

Following these recommendations will maximize accuracy and minimize the need for manual finishing.

## Orienting

1. Click on <font color="#05a9f4">**Orient** </font>or <font color="#05a9f4">**Shift + O**</font> in the main bar in the printer software.
2. In the lower right corner, turn on <font color="#ff9900">**Overhang Detection**</font> or <font color="#ff9900">**V key**</font> set to **40 degrees** to indicate areas that need support in red.

::Image[]{src="https://res.cloudinary.com/carbon3d/image/upload/Education/Materials/dental/__General_Use/Orient-toggle-platform-color01.png" size="70" width="1661" height="866" position="flex-start" alt="Printer UI showing Orient and Overhang Detection buttons" showCaption="false"}

3\. Orient each crown so that the margin and interface are <font color="#30c49a">**free of overhangs**.</font>
4\. Refine orientation to <font color="#30c49a">**minimize overhangs**</font> on other crown surfaces.

::Image[]{src="https://api.archbee.com/api/optimize/3CesIL2dYMCHPZvRjp8S0/QLoc5h6B0MCc5X-yApL20_image.png" size="74" width="1117" height="1026" position="flex-start" alt="Images showing overhangs" showCaption="false"}

The margin and interface of each crown should now be free of overhangs. The remaining surfaces should have a minimal amount of overhangs.

**Note:** Margins and interfaces that have overhangs will require supports. These supports affect fit and will require finishing to ensure proper seating.

## Supporting

1. Click <font color="#30c49a">**Support or Shift + S**</font> in the dark gray bar.
2. Under **Position,&#x20;**&#x73;elect <font color="#05a9f4">**Above Platform**</font> to lift parts off the platform.
3. Skip <font color="#ff9900">**Auto Support Method**</font> as this mode is not recommended.
4. Click <font color="#ff3399">**Manually Ad**</font><font color="#ff3399">**d**</font> to go to the Support editing interface.

## Add Fence Supports

1. Click <font color="#30c49a">**Toggle Platform button**</font> in the lower tool bar to hide the platform. This will enable better visibility during fence creation.
2. Click the <font color="#05a9f4">**fences icon**</font> in the top menu bar.
3. Click a <font color="#ff9900">**series of points**</font> in an area of overhang to define the fence.
4. If an overhang region is large, apply fencing to the edges of the region as well as the center.
5. Click ESC key and then hold down E key to reposition points.
6. Click <font color="#6752ff">**Generate** </font>to create the fence geometry. This may take a few minutes.
7. Repeat as needed.

# Bridges

## Proper Orientation of Bridges

Carbon recommends:

- No overhangs on crown margins.
- No overhangs on interface surfaces.
- Minimum overhangs on buccal/lingual crown surfaces.

Following these recommendations will maximize accuracy and minimize the need for manual finishing.

&#x20;  3\. The bridge <font color="#30c49a">**margin and interface should face away from the platform** </font>(occlusal  &#x20;
&#x20;       surface will face platform).
&#x20;  4\. Keep parts <font color="#30c49a">**roughly parallel to the platform.**</font>

The margin and interface of each bridge should now be free of overhangs. The remaining surfaces should have a minimal amount of overhangs.

3. Enter at least <font color="#05a9f4">**1 mm**</font> in <font color="#05a9f4">**Padding.**</font>
   - Models require a minimum of 1 mm of space between them.
4. Leave **Optimize starting rotation** unchecked.
   - This leaves your parts in their previous orientations.
5. Leave **Allowed rotations** at the default setting.
